The lithosphere consists of solid rock, soil and minerals. The hydrosphere consists of water in all its forms. The atmosphere is the layer of gases around the Earth. The biosphere consists of all living plants and animals and their interactions with the rocks, soil, air and water in their habitats.
1. Everything in Earth's system can be placed into one of four major subsystems: land, water, living things, or air. These four subsystems are called "spheres." Specifically, they are the "lithosphere" (land), "hydrosphere" (water), "biosphere" (living things), and "atmosphere" (air).
These spheres are closely connected. For example, many birds (biosphere) fly through the air (atmosphere), while water (hydrosphere) often flows through the soil (lithosphere). In fact, the spheres are so closely connected that a change in one sphere often results in a change in one or more of the other spheres.
