M. Hamel was very sad on the last day of his school. Instead of just being sentimental, he taught grammar, writing skills to his students. He had new copies for his students, written in a beautiful round hand: France, Alsace, France, Alsace.
He analyzed the causes of defeat of Alsace. He held himself and the procrastination of the French people to be responsible for the defeat. On the last day he appealed to his students to hold on to the French till the very last breath as it was the key to their freedom.
He was emotionally attached to the school and all his students. However, he was very brave and strong. He was really sorry for not making sincere efforts to teach French to his countrymen. At the end, he became so emotional that he could not speak.
