It is a series of changes occurring in the wall of uterus of human females that prepares the uterus to receive a fertilized egg. The first menstruation begins at puberty, i.e at an age around 12-13 years known as menarche and continues till the age of 40-45 years known as menopause.
This complete process or period from menarche to menopause is called menstruation

Every month female body prepares itself to have a embryo that's why it prepares the uterus by cushiony blood layer with other constituents too . when female doesn't recieve the male gamete and then after fusion doesn't get embryo, then female body sheds this blood layer ( actually the layer is endometrium) . so the cycle of shedding this, lasts 2 -8 days and it is called menstruation or menstrual cycle. this cycle stops during the age of 45 - 50 and hence regarded as menopause. During pregnancy this cycle stops for some couple of days as female body receives embryo in uterus or womb. I hope this helps
