The Invisible Man was filled with murderous rage after fleeing from Iping village. In the biting cold, he was starving and without clothes or shelter. That was when Mr. Thomas Marvel was found. He saw Marvel as an outcast like him, and thought he could help him greatly. He wanted to be assisted by Marvel in getting food, clothing and refuge, especially in finding his books and objects from the inn.

The Invisible Man assured Marvel rewards for his services. At first, Marvel was eager to help Griffin, but he attempted to escape when Griffin was threatening. If he tried to cheat him, Griffin threatened him with dreadful consequences. Nevertheless Marvel was an opportunist.

At Iping, he attempted to flee from him, but was captured. Marvel betrays Griffin and takes him to the police, however, Griffin runs away. He also attempted to show a sailor in Port Stowe the identity of the Invisible Man. He escaped from Griffin along with 3 precious books and all the funds he had stolen during his voyage from Iping to Burdock,

EXPLANATION:

  • Thomas Marvel was a huge man of flexible visage and who had a nose of cylindrical protuberance, a fluctuating, ample, liquorish, mouth and a coarse beard. He had a well-rounded figure and his short legs accentuated the propensity towards a plump figure.  Marvel gave an impression that of a tramp –the charity boots, the shabby hat, his homeless lifestyle, and his clothes. He does everything in a laid back manner implying that he was a lazy person. Marvel truly seen as an opportunist in the novel.
  • After the death of Griffin. He is now the owner of Griffin's three books that record his stolen research and cash. Marvel opens an inn and names it The Invisible Man quite shrewdly. He tells stories concerning Griffin and therefore gets more and more customers. Unknown to others, he hides Griffin's secret formula books and looks at them excitedly in secret. Marvel tries to decipher the notes hoping that one day he would recreate Griffin's work.
  • However, since many pages were inadvertently washed away during the chase of Griffin by Marvel and the balance notes of Griffin are coded in Latin and Greek, Marvel is totally incapable of comprehending them. He may also be hoping and expecting that one day the right customer would pay him the best rates for those books. Paradoxically, Griffin died a miserable death (where he was chasing Mr. Kemp, an old acquaintance who got Griffin caught to the police but Griffin escaped again. Later, unfortunately, the locals get hold of Griffin and killed him) while Marvel, the weak and powerless, became rich.
