The Merchant of Venice is one of Shakespeare's romantic comedies, probably written in 1596 and 1597, and forms one of a group of such comedies, along with The Two Gentlemen of Verona, As You Like It, and Twelfth Night.

the merchant of venice was a romantic comedy. it is because we can see in the act1 scene 1 their was a gratiano who was really a funny and a bold guy. he tries to find out the reason why antonio is sad and with his funny and nonsense talks he tries to make antonio laugh.
And when their was a conversation between nerrisa and jessica about the different suitors it was able to make the audience laugh because of their peculiar behaviour . and in the whole drama casket story was one of the comedy part.and towards the last the ring story was a really comedy part of the drama. and the character launcelot was also able to make the readers laugh a lot while he was having a conversation with his father GOBBO and also by punning of the words.
