Basically Tom, the cat, is chased by Montmorency. He feels the cat had wronged Montmorency so he doesn’t want to hear a word “cat” anymore. He basically chases Tom around. The cat calmly trots while Montmorency stumbles around. The sense of the cat being in control over the rather doltish dog is at play here. Also Montmorency becomes an extension of the bungling men on the journey.
