Answer :

Mr. and Mrs. van Daan's attitudes greatly differ towards the war.

The pessimistic Mr. van Daan argues that the war would continue till the end of the year. He predicted this out of his deep knowledge of politics. He feels that this is very long time and there is no assurity that the war would be over by the end of that time. The war has caused great pain, sorrow and suffering. There are tensions and fears about whether the annex residents would be able to survive the war.

His wife, Mrs. van Daan, insists that the Annex residents should obtain expensive and unaffordable false IDs. Her attitude keeps on changing. One day she says that she wants to move to Jerusalem after the war to reunite with her extended family. The other day she says that she wants to get baptized after the war. Her attitude greatly betrays her frivolous and naive nature.

Peter van Daan was a shy, awkward and quiet boy of sixteen. He was thoughtful, sensitive, sensible and observant, different from his loud and brash parents. Reticent and reclusive, he was unlike other boys and Anne initially misjudged him to be a hypochondriac, hypersensitive and lazy.
