Mrs. Slater is quite agitated, excited, occupied, and busy at the beginning of the play. Her father has passed away (in reality he is lying intoxicated). She is expecting her sister and her husband. They can arrive anytime for mourning. Mrs. Slater is in quite a hurry as she wants to secure her deceased father’s bureau, slippers, clock, etc. before her sister’s arrival.

As Mrs Slater is laying the table, her mind is working hard on trying to figure out all that she can lay her hands on her supposedly dead father’s property. She must do this as fast as possible as her sister and brother in law are expected any time.
Although she is dressed in black, she is not exactly mourning the death of her father. She is busy thinking of ways to outdo her sister and trying to decide on what things she must take into her possession.
