Answer:

The National Register of Citizens (NRC) is a register containing names & certain relevant information for identification of Indian citizens. The register was initially, specifically made for Assam state. However, Home Minister Amit Shah declared during a parliamentary session that the register would be extended to the entire country.

The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill seeks to amend the Citizenship Act of 1955. Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Christians, Parsis and Jains from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh — as religious minorities, fleeing persecution — will not be considered illegal immigrants if they have entered India on or before December 31, 2014.

Explanation:

If the Indian government proceeds with its plan, in a worst-case scenario we could be looking at the biggest refugee crisis on the planet.

The issue means that all illegal immigrants b/w 1972 and 2014 will be given citizenship except Muslims. Those in Assam whose names do not appear on the NRC have been told the burden of proof is on them to prove that they are citizens. But many rural residents don’t have birth certificates or other papers, and a quarter of the population in Assam state is illiterate. And it’s not clear where the newly stateless people would go. Neighboring Bangladesh has already said it won’t take them.
