When carban dioxidi reacts with limewater it turns limewater[Ca(OH)2] milky due to the formation of insoluble calcium carbonate(CaCO3).
Ammonia has a sharp smell .It turns red litmus blue.It also forms a white smoke of Ammonia chloride. When concentrated hydrochloride gas is near it.

Experiment :
Aim : To distinguish HCl and CO₂ .
Materials :
- beaker containing ammonia.
- a glass rod .
Procedure.
- Dip the glass rod in ammonia .
- Bring the glass rod near both.
Observation :
- If you see that the glass rod shows dense white fumes , then it is hydrogen chloride .
- This way we can test the hydrogen chloride.
- The other one is carbon-dioxide.
Conclusion
Thus we learnt the test for hydrogen chloride.
Reaction :
NH₃ + HCl =====> NH₄Cl
