Explanation:

Development of new species from a pre-existing one as a result of adaptation to various environmental condition is called adaptive radiation. One example of adaptive radiation are Darwin's finches of Galapagos island.

Out of  14 species of Darwin's finches, 13 are found in Galapagos island. It is believed that these small birds decended from a single ancestral species. It is assumed that they migrated to the group of islands from the mainland of South America and occupied different habitats. Depending on the habitat they developed new characters to adjust with the local environment. These finches had dietary adaptation which made them different from the rest of the population. This is obvious from the shape and size of their beaks.
