take a mat (which is not used for long time),now beat that mat with a stick . Now you can see the dust particles which comes from the mat ,this is due to inertia of rest

Inertia of rest is the inherent property of an object which resist the change in its state of rest.

Aim:  To illustrate the inertia of rest.

Apparatus required :
Transparent Glass tumbler, Coin and smooth card board.

Procedure :
1. Place the card board on the top of the glass and place a coin as shown in the figure.2.Apply a gentle force using fingers to flick the cardboard.

Observation:
we observe that coin drops straight into the glass.
Reason:
According to First law of motion " Every object continues to be in state of rest or in state of uniform motion unless it is compelled to change its state by an external force"
So here , Force was applied to cardboard , where as coin was in state of rest, it continues to be in state of rest due to inertia. Hence it falls into the glass tumbler.

hope it helps.
