(A) Ostwald's method theory and equation : Mixture of 1 volume Ammonia and 8 volumes of air is passed through a wire mesh of platinum maintained at 800°C, when 90% of ammonia is oxidised to nitric oxide.

4NH3 +5O2 ------ 4NO + 6H2O

The nitric oxide so formed reacts with oxygen and converts it into nitrogen peroxide.

2NO + O2 -------- 2NO2

NO2 is sent to adsorption chamber Where water falls slowly from the top. Water reacts with NO2 to form dilute nitric acid.

2NO2 + H2O ------- HNO2 + HNO3

3HNO2 -------- HNO3 + 2NO + H2O
