Take an example of a metal Magnesium which is to be burned in the presence of oxygen So the reaction is 2Mg + O2 = 2MgO
Now what exactly is happening in this reaction is that when Mg gets oxidised to MgO Two of the electrons from Mg gets transferred from Mg to oxygen atom
Here Mg is oxidised and O is reduced as it is gaining those two electronsSo basically , Oxidation is a process in which an atom or a group of atoms taking part in chemical reaction loses one or more electrons.While , reduction is a process in which an atom or a group of atoms taking part in chemical reaction gains ·one or more electrons
