Basics:

=> Lanthanides are non-radioactive, rare-earth, mostly metallic elements that are only found in very small quantities in the Earth's crust.

=> They are highly dense in nature and exhibit higher melting and boiling points than commonly known metals.

Question:

Describe oxidation state of lanthanides.

Answer:

=> Lanthanides are also called inner transition metals and hence they also exhibit multiple positive oxidation states.

=> They may have oxidation states of +2, +3 and +4 as well.

=> The most commonly found oxidation state which is found in all Lanthanides is +3, thus, they mostly form trivalent cations.
