The phases of the Moon are the different ways the Moon looks from Earth over about a month. As the Moon orbits around the Earth, the half of the Moon that faces the Sun will be lit up. The different shapes of the lit portion of the Moon that can be seen from Earth are known as phases of the Moon.

1) New moon : During the new moon phase , the moon lies between Earth and the sun , and we do not see the moon .
2) Cresent moon : After a few days, a small portion of the moon becomes visible to us in the shape of Cresent.
3) The first quarter : As the Cresent moon grows , the lit area of the moon gradually becomes larger , until half the moon can be seen . This phase of the moon is called the first quarter.
4) Full moon : The lit area of the moon keeps increasing further , until it becomes a full moon . At the moon , the moon is visible to us as a complete circle .
