Poverty line refers to the cut off point in terms of per capita expenditure incurred by the people to satisfy basic needs.People living below this cut off point are referred to as poor.

Based on the calorie requirement fixed by the Planning Commission, the poverty line is fixed at Rs 328 per person per month for rural household and Rs Four Hundred and Fifty four  per person per month for urban household.
