prophase of mitosis is as simple as just converting the chromatin into condensed chromosomes (chromosome = chromatin (DNA + genes) + histone and non histone proteins)

prophase 1 is a complex process where essentially the crossing over and recombination of genetic material between non sister chromatids occur - this results in the genetically unidentical, genetic variation.

If you are a higher grade student, you ,may know that prophase one from meiosis is further categorized in a few stages i.e. Leptotene, Zygotene, Pachytene, Diplotene and Diakinesis (in that order).
