1. On the basis of development :-
a) Actual resources - actual resources are those whose quantity is known.
eg : petroleum in West asia
b) Potential resources - potential resources are those whose entire quantity is not known.
eg : uranium in ladakh.
2.on the basis of origin:-
a) Biotic resources - Biotic refers to living beings.
eg: human , animals....
b) Abiotic resources - Abiotic refers to non living things.
eg: minerals,water, air.....
3.on the basis of distribution:-
a) Ubiquitous resources - resources are found everywhere.
eg: air we breathe.
b) localised resources - resources are found in a particular place.
eg: copper and iron ore.
4.Natural resources can be divided into :-
a) Renewable resources - resources which get renewed or replenished quickly.
eg: solar and wind energy
b) Non Renewable resources - resources which have limited stock. ( OR ) resources which don't get renewed quickly.
eg: coal , petroleum , natural gas.

They can also be classified as actual and potential on the basis of level of development and use, on the basis of origin they can be classified as biotic and abiotic, and on the bases of their distribution, as ubiquitous and localized. An item becomes a resource with time and developing technology.
