cyanobacteria characteristics are a tolerance of extreme conditions and an ability to exist without vitamins. They use phosphorus, iron and other micronutrients, and ammonia or nitrate as a nitrogen supply. Some types of cyanobacteria are filamentous and don't need sunlight.
