sclerenchyma is a plant tissue providing mechanical stiffness and strength. fibres and sclereids are the main types of sclerenchyma cell. most sclerenchyma cells show intrusive growth. the cell walls of sclerenchyma have thickened secondary layers made from cellulose hemicelluloses and lignin.
