Lushkoff is a beggar and earns a little by telling lies with evoking sympathy among the listeners.
When Lushkoff comes across Sergei who does not give him alms but offers to give him work of chopping wood, he is weak as well as unwilling do the laborious job.
Lushkoff is no longer a beggar but a respectable notary. Lushkoff discloses the fact that Sergei’s maidservant had chopped wood for him.
