Simple Machine:

We use many types of tools or devices to perform many types of work in our daily life. For example, we use a shovel to transfer sand from one place to another, a spade to dig, a broom to sweep and a hammer to break stone into peebles. A plank is used for loading onto and unloading from trucks. All of these simple devices are used to do our work in a convenient way. Sometimes, a single instrument is also used in different ways. For example, a hammer is used to break stone into peebles, to pass a nail into wood and to beat an iron rod into a sheet. The same hammer can be used to pass a nail out of a wooden block.

The devices or simple instruments which are used to do our work in a convenient way are called simple machines. They make our work easier in the following ways:

✪ They transfer effort from one point of the machine to another point.

✪ They magnify the applied effort.

✪ They increase the speed of doing work.

✪ They change the direction of force.

Types Of Simple Machine:

On the basis of the structure of simple machines, they are classified into the following six types:

✪ Lever

✪ Wheel and axle

✪ Pulley

✪ Inclined plane

✪ Screw

✪ Wedge

Answer:

Simple machine is defined as a device which either changes the direction of effort, or reduces the effort to overcome the load , or acts as a speed multiplier .

Explanation:

The simple machine has several advantages . The first advantage is that it acts as a force multiplier . When we apply a small force , we can easily displace a particular thing which we want and this can be achieved by machines .

The second advantage of a machine is that it acts as a speed multiplier and for obtaining a gain in speed .

The load is the force which the machine overcomes . The effort is the force exerted on the machine to overcome the object.

The machine helps in applying the force in the desired direction which is easy for us .

The machine has the fulcrum which has a point to support the machine .

The ratio of load and effort is termed as MA ( Mechanical Advantage ) .

The ratio of displacement of effort and displacement of load is called VR ( Velocity Ratio ) .

If the Mechanical Advantage is more than 1 , then the Load is more than Effort .

If it is less than 1 , then the Effort is more than load .

Else if Mechanical Advantage is equal to 1 , Effort is equal to Load .

The simple machine has several applications in our daily lives and they are used for several things ranging from transportation to going to bed for sleeping , etc .

The ideal machine is a machine which has equal mechanical advantage and velocity ratio .

The machine in reality cannot be ideal because there is loss of energy due to friction .

The ideal machine has efficiency 100 % . The simple machine has efficiency less than 100 % .
