Experiments to demonstrate a magnetic field around current carrying straight wire
We have a vertical thick insulated copper wire passing vertically through a horizontal placed cardboard . Connect the two ends of the wire to the terminals of a battery . Inorder to find out the magnetic pattern , sprinkle some iron fillings on top of the cardboard and tap the cardboard gently . The iron fillings get magnetised and arranged themselves in concentric circles around the current carrying wire . Inorder to find out the magnetic field placed a compass on the cardboard and the direction in which the north pole points will give the direction of the magnetic field .

Through this experiment, a current-carrying wire's deflection of the compass needle reveals that an electric current generates a magnetic field around it.
Explanation:
- We take a dense insulated wire and fasten it north-south. Now, we're putting a plotting compass under the cable. The two sides of the wire are tied through a connection to a battery.
- Initially, if there is no current moving through the cable, let us set the compass pin parallel to the cable, i.e., north-south direction.
- By turning the switch, if we move a current via the wire, we note that the needle in the compass is deflected from its north-south place.
- Finally the compass needle defaults to its original place if the current is turned off.
