The  people  of  Bastar  believe  that  each  village  was  given  its  land  by  the   Earth.
In  return   they  look  after  the  Earth  by  making  some  offerings  at  each  agricultural  festival. They  also  show  respect  to  the  spirit  of  the  river, the  mountain  and    the  forest.
Local people  look  after  all  te  natural  resources  within  their  boundary. Some  villages  protect  their  forests  by  engaging   watchmen  and  each  household   contrbutes some  grain  to  pay  them.
Suppose  if  people  from  a  village  want  to  take  some  wood  from  the  forests  of  another  village  then  they  pay  a  small  fee  called  devsari, dand  or  man   in  exchange.  In  the  annual  big  hunt  where  the  headmen  of  villages  in  a  pargana  meet  they  discuss  issues  and  matters  of  concern  including  forests.
