There are mainly 10 processes for word formation that are normally used.

Clipping: shortening of words often subdivided into back, fore, middle an complex clipping. Example influenza to 'flu' is middle clipping, gymnasium to 'gym' is back clipping. 

Acronym: the usage of abbreviations or the initial letters of the words. Example WWF (World Wildlife Organization).

Blending: Is when parts from two or more words is used to form a new word. Example Brunch is blended from 'breakfast and lunch'.

Borrowing: When some words are borrowed from any other language it can be translated to become a part of the English language. For example yogurt is a  Turkish word.

Coinage: Is the formation of a new word. For example the names of all brands. 

Deviation: Forming new words using existing words. For example sadness from the word 'sad'. 

Compounding: When new words are formed by combining words. For example teapot, waterproof.
