Sporophyte of polytrichum:

Polytrichium is one of the genus of mossus. It is commonly called as haircap mosses or hair moss. This genus has about 70 species. It is cosmopolitan in distribution. It is mostly represented as a sporophyte. It derived its name from Greek describing “ poly “ as many  and “thrix" as hair. It means that it has hairlike parts . In polytrichium,  only one sporophytic part is produced from female gametophytic part. Sporophyte maturation takes about a quarter to half a year.It has a long stalk called seta and a capsule like a cap called operculum. The capsule and operculum are covered by sheath called calyptra. The mouth of operculum contains teeth like structure called peristome. Inside the capsule, the spore producing cell undergo meiosis to form spores. These spores are transported to other areas by wind and they grow.
