Answer:

The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is a large, dynamic structure that serves many roles in the cell including calcium storage, protein synthesis and lipid metabolism. The diverse functions of the ER are performed by distinct domains; consisting of tubules, sheets and the nuclear envelope.

▪️Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is a cellular organelle. It is the transport network for molecules going to specific places, as compared to molecules that float freely in the cytoplasm.

  • It is of two types .

  1. Rough Endoplasmic reticulum(RER):- Studded with ribosomes on the surface.
  2. Smooth Endoplasmic reticulum(SER):- No ribosomes are appeared on the surface.

Structure of Endo plasmic reticulum:-

▪️The general structure of the endoplasmic reticulum is a network of membranes called cisternae.

▪️These sac-like structures are held together by the cytoskeleton.

▪️The phospholipid membrane encloses the cisternal space (or lumen), which is continuous with the perinuclear space but separate from the cytosol.

Functions of Endoplasmic reticulum:-

  • It plays a major role in the production, processing, and transport of proteins and lipids.

  • The ER produces transmembrane proteins and lipids for its membrane and for many other cell components including lysosomes, secretory vesicles, the Golgi appatatus, the cell membrane, and plant cell vacuoles.

  • RER participates in the synthesis of enzymes and proteins and helps in the formation of lysosomes.

  • SER synthesises glycogen, lipids and steroids and gives rise to Spherosomes and oleosomes.
