The synaptonemal complex (SC) is two parallel aligned proteinaceous chromosome cores of a pair of homologous chromosomes at prophase of meiosis. The cores are in the order of 60 to 100 nm wide, lie about 100 nm apart, and are interconnected by transverse filaments. The chromatin is attached to the cores in a series of loops. Superficially, the structure of the SC is similar over a wide range of organisms from fungi, to protists, to plants, and to invertebrate and vertebrate animals. Although present at meiosis of most sexually reproducing organisms, it is notably absent in some species such as the fungus Ustilago maydis, the protist Tetrahymena, and males of some species of fruit flies. It is only partially developed in the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe.
