Spinal cord

Explanation:

TS of spinal cord shows (refer image):

  1. Spinal cord is externally covered by 3 meninges. It is cylindrical but dorsoventrally flattened.
  2. It has deep ventral fissure and shallow dorsal fissure. The dorsal septum extends inwards from the dorsal fissure.
  3. The central canal is continuous with the fourth ventricle of brain and contains cerebro-spinal fluid.
  4. Central canal is surrounded by inner grey matter containing cytons.
  5. Grey matter is surrounded by white matter, which divides into doral, lateral and ventral funiculi.
  6. 2 dorsolateral horns and 2 ventrolateral horns given H shape to the grey matter.

The main functions of the spinal cord are:

  1. Relay messages from the brain to different parts of the body to perform an action.
  2. To pass along messages from sensory receptors to the brain.
  3. To coordinate reflexes that are managed by the spinal cord alone.
