Heya...

The Subsidiary Alliance system was used by Lord Wellesley, who was Governor-General of India from 1798-1805, to build an empire in India.
Under the system, the allying Indian state's ruler was compelled to accept the permanent stationing of a British force within his territory and to pay a subsidy for its maintenance.
Also, the Indian ruler had to agree to the posting of a British Resident in his court.
Under the Subsidiary Treaty, the Indian ruler could not employ any European in his service without the prior approval of the British. Nor could he negotiate with any other Indian ruler without consulting the Governor-General.
In return for all this, the British agreed to defend the ruler from his enemies and adopt a policy of non-interference in the internal matters of the allied state....☺️☺️

Subsidiary Alliance is a system developed by the East India Company. It solved the problem of ruling a nation which is under the rule of a king.

The main principles of a subsidiary alliance were:

1) An Indian ruler entering into a subsidiary alliance with the British had to accept British forces in his  territory and also agreed to pay for their maintenance.

2) The ruler would accept a British people in his state.Such a ruler would not form an alliance with any  other power, nor would he declare war against any power without the permission of the British.

3) The ruler would not employ any Europeans other than the British, and if he were already doing so, he would dismiss them.

4) In case of a conflict with any other state, the British would decide what to do, and he would accept their solution.

5) The ruler would acknowledge the East India Company as the power in India. In return for the ruler accepting its conditions, the Company undertook to protect the state from external dangers and internal disorders.

6) If the Indian rulers failed to make the payments required by the alliance, then part art of their territory was to be taken away as a penalty.

Hope this helps.
