The Himalayas are the young and folded mountains which run along the northern borders of India. It ranges from west (Indus) to east (Brahmaputra) covering a distance of 2400 km.

The 3 parallel ranges of the Himalayas are as follows ↓

Himadri or the greater Himalayas

⇒ It is the northernmost range consisting of the loftiest peaks with an average height of 6000 metres. The basic part of this range is composed of granite.

Himachal or the lesser Himalayas

⇒ This range lies to the south of Himadri. It is mainly composed of highly compressed rocks. It's height is between 3700-4500 m and it has a width of 50 km. It's other important parts are Pirpanjal, Mahabharat and Dhauladhar. Famous valleys here are Kullu, Kangra and Kashmir.

The Shiwaliks

⇒ This is the outermost range of the Himalayas. It's height is between 900-1100 m and a width of 10-50 km. It is composed of the sediments brought down by the rivers from the main Himalayan ranges.
