Rutherford' Model

How he made his model?

  • He gave his alpha- particle scattering experiment. He directed a beam of alpha particles at a thin gold foil.
  • The bombardment of Alpha particles with the gold foil resulted that:
  1. Some particles remained undeflected
  2. Some particles deflected by small angles
  3. Some retraced its path back.

Achievement

1. Discovery of Nucleus: The deflection of alpha-particles suggested that there is positive charge concentrated in the centre of the atom. This region is called Nucleus.

2. Nucleus and Electrons are held together by the electrostatic forces.

3. Electrons revolve around the centrally situated nucleus.

Drawbacks

1. He could not explain stability of atom.

2. He said that electrons continuously lose their energy and finally fall on the Nucleus, which actually do not happen.

3. He didn't mention anything about arrangement of electrons in orbits.
