Martha Washington was an African American girl. She was the daughter of the Keller's cook. She was Helen's constant companion. It was she who understood Helen's first signs this gave Helen a lot of support to spend her days happily. Martha was hardly 2 or 3 years older than Helen. She had a deep love for Helen. She allowed Helen to tyrannize her. Since Martha understood Helen signs, Helen seldom had any difficulty in making Martha do just as she wished. Helen always bossed her around and Martha willingly obeyed her.Martha was somewhat mischievous. Once she seized the pair of scissors and cut off one of Helen's curls. Helen's mother saved her from the cruel scissors of Martha .
Both The two girls Helen and Martha enjoyed acts of Mischief and had fun in playing together. They played in the kitchen, kneading dough balls, helping make ice-cream, grinding coffee quarreling over the cake bowl. They fed the hens and turkeys that swarmed about the kitchen steps. They loved to hunt eggs outdoors. She used to go hunting to the guinea fowl eggs in the long grass with Helen.
