Phototropism - Experiments. Some of the early phototropism experiments were conducted by Charles Darwin (best known for his contributions to evolutionary theory) and his son. He noticed that if light is shone on a coleoptile (shoot tip) from one side the shoot bends (grows) toward the light.

The growth of a plant in response to light is known as phototropism.

If a plant is kept near the only open window of a dark room, after few days it can be found that the growth of the plant tip is towards the window and the plant is growing by bending itself towards the light source. This proves that light is responsible for the bending of the branch.
