The ‘Dark Princess’ portrayed on the wall of one of the caves at the Ajanta Caves complex, may have been a princess from the South of India – either Andhra Pradesh or Tamil Nadu. The painting shows a dark skinned, beautiful young woman, adorned with jewellery and a delicate tiara-like ornament on her hair.
Ajanta Caves are cut out of rocks, housing Buddhist monuments such as rock sculptures and painting, dating back to the 2nd century BC to about 480 AD. It is located in Aurangabad District in Maharashtra.
