Lord Dalhousie adopted the most potent policy called Doctrine of Lapse. According to this policy, the ruler of an Indian state, who had enter into a Subsidiary Alliance with the British, passed away without having any natural heir, it was to be annexed to the British dominion, instead of passing to the adopted son.
