Appearence of Coal:   Coal is a combustible black or brownish-black sedimentary rock, formed as rock strata called coal seams. Coal is mostly carbon with variable amounts of other elements; chiefly hydrogen, sulfur, oxygen, and nitrogen.

The Appearance of Petroleum:  It is usually black or dark brown (although it may be yellowish, reddish, or even greenish). In the reservoir, it is usually found in association with natural gas, which being lighter forms a "gas cap" over the petroleum, and saline water which, being heavier than most forms of crude oil, generally sinks beneath it.

The Appearance of Coal tar:   Coal tar is a thick dark liquid which is a by-product of the production of coke and coal gas from coal. It has both medical and industrial uses.

The appearance of Coke:  Coke is a grey, hard, and porous fuel with high carbon content and few impurities, made by heating coal or oil in the absence of air—a destructive distillation process.
