He could infer from their pale faces and flim bodies that they were frightened and malnourished . He even noticed that some of them had outgrown their ages which suggested from their faces only, while some had twisted bones and feeble eyes . Nicholas could fell the suffering that the boys had to undergo instead of the happiness which every child is entitled to . He was bewildered on seeing the criminal like eyes of the children who seemed to have never experienced the nurture of a mother.
