He is described as a man who has been soaked in water, smothered in mud,lamed by stones, cut by flints, stung by nettles and torn by briars; who limped and shivered and glared and growled. He was interested in Pip's brother in law as he knows that he is a blacksmith and has the tools to remove his chains. He was in chains when he was at the marshes as he was a convict.
