Describe the behaviour of a wire under gradually increasing load.

when load attached to the wire is increasing gradually, the behaviour of the wire changes . At any point in time, we can measure , stress and corresponding strain.

In initial time, stress is directly proportional to strain and this region, obeys Hook's law. the region OA is said to be elastic . The point A is called elastic limit.

on further increasing the load attached to the wire, a small increment in stress cause a large increase in strain. This region AA1 is said to be partially and partly plastic.

At the point B is called yield point, the strain begins to increase without change in stress. The tangent to the point B is parallel to the strain as shown in figure.

next region e.g., BC is called break down region, where on loading the wire, the wire becomes thin and breaks . The point C at which the wire breaks is called breaking ponts .
