India's avifauna is extremely rich. It is believed that 12% of the world's bird species are found in India which is home to nearly 1,263 species of birds.
The dense evergreen forests of the North-East, the desert region of Rajasthan, the perennially snow clad mountains of the Himalayas in the North, the dry deciduous forests in the central Indian region as well as the coastal regions in the Southern part of the country all comprise of unique habitats and ecosystems that sustain bird life.
The wetlands of the country, including the Ramsar Sites, are home to beautiful species such as waterfowls, ducks, swans, geese, herons, cranes, etc.
Some of the terrestrial bird species include quails, partridges, monals, peafowls, tragopans, etc.
The varied geographical and climatic conditions prevalent across the country have given rise to such a beautifully rich, diverse avifauna.
