The black clouds were huge and scary as they were storm clouds. Once the narrator went inside the clouds he couldn't see anything and everything was black all of a sudden. Due to these storm clouds all his instruments had stopped working too.

The narrator (Fredrick Forsyth) was a professional pilot.He was going from France to England. He was flying his Dakota aeroplane. When he had gone 150 kilometres from France, he saw storm clouds. They were huge. They looked like black mountains standing in front of him across the sky.
