Like Team 1 and 2, also Team 3 started out working from Kathmandu, where the facilities are the best and most of the institutions, NGO’s and companies are situated. Supported by the work that has been done so far by SSN and the contacts that are established, we could start right away to work towards our goal: developing a feasible housing solution for rural Nepal. To achieve this we consider a field study to be extremely important.

Therefore, a trip to Ratankot has been planned for which we will depart next Friday. In Ratankot, a village in the heavily affected Sindhupalchok district, we will stay for a week to assess the conditions and in particular the available local building materials. As Ratankot is a very remote village which is inaccessible by cars in some parts of the year, the use of local building material can decrease the high costs of transport. However, the field study will have to show whether building with the available materials on site can make a house earthquake resistant.
