The smell of hot sizzling food reaches you at a distance. It is because of evaporation of some of liquid from the food. The liquid from a hot sizzling food forms vapors due to high temperature. These vapors spread around in all directions because of their high kinetic energy. When these vapors reaches our nose we get the smell of food. But in the case of cold food the rate of evaporation from the food is very low due to its low temperature. So, to get the smell of cold food we have to go near.
