In High Street, when Harris, George and J. returned from a dip, they found Tom, a cat darting out on the street. Montmorency also saw the cat. He gave a cry of joy like a victorious warrior. The cat was very large and black one. Such a cat had never been seen by them before. He looked very disreputable one. He had lost half of his tail, one of his ears and some part of the nose. He was looking long and muscled. Montmorency went for the cat with a great speed. But Tom sat down in the middle of the road and looked fearless. He looked at Montmorency as if he was saying, "Yes! you want me?" Montmorency felt his heart to freeze. He took no time to understand the danger he was near. He put his tail behind him, suggesting that he surrenders.
