When we eat food or any sugary substance, the saliva present in our mouth starts acting on that food and convert it in maltose but when that food remain in our mouth for longer time, the maltose in our mouth decreases the pH of our mouth, causing it little acidic. Because of that acidic behaviour, the outer shell of our teeth start destroying, what we call it tooth decay.

The only prevention of it is to brush properly so that no food remain in our mouth and also toothpaste is a base which neutralise the acidic behaviour of mouth preventing tooth decay.

Hope it helps you.
