Causes of Great Uprising of 1857 :

  • Revenue systems incorporated some new rules that cut off the appropriate understanding between government and cultivators .

  • High revenue settlements

  • Peasants were exploited by money lenders

  • Commercialisation of agriculture

  • Corrupt administration

  • Indian sepoys were prohibited to show religious marks / caste marks / tilak or turban

  • Forced to shave beards

  • Treated as pigs

  • Lower wages

  • No promotion

  • No bhatta

  • Crossing sea was made compulsory

  • Doctrine of Lapse and Subsidiary Alliance ; common annexation policies caused honour to be lost .
