during inspiration the muscle around rib cage contract lifting the ribs outward and upward. due to which the lungs enlarge

The changes that occur in the rib cage are described below -
Case I : When we inhale air -
The lungs gets expanded when we breathe the air in. This causes the ribs to expand and also the diaphragm moves down.
Case II : When we exhale the air -
The lungs expels the air out. The diaphragm and the ribs returns to its starting position when we exhale because the air goes away from the lungs.
