Answers
Answer:
One of the main characters in the short story “Hearts and Hands,” written by O Henry, is an attractive young woman named Miss Fairchild. This character has feelings for a man named Mr. ... Miss Fairchild is a rich woman who has manner and style. In the train, she looks and speaks how a first class person should.
Explanation:
Miss Fairchild was a rich lady who was good looking elegantly dressed and surrounded by all the luxurious comforts of an experienced traveller.
On seeing Mr Easton she is pleased and glad. However she finds the handcuffs disturbing. She keeps dropping hints about how she liked him and would not mind to get involved with him by talking about how she liked the west, how the air agreed with her, and how she could live and be happy in the west where Mr Easton lived. This shows her desperation.
She also talks about how her mother had left a week early as her father was ill. The fact that she did not return with her mother shows us about how very little she cared about those around her.
She is outwardly sophisticated and proud as her initial glance on the two men was of a swift disinterest.
She is an average woman with an average intellectual capacity as she did not pick up on the fact that Marshals never handcuffed their prisoners to their right hand.
She is also an opportunist as she opens up to Mr Easton only till the time she thinks there is a chance of a relationship with him. When she realises there isn't, she retreats back to her cold and distant manner.
She's also fake and pretentious as she tried to display that she's above everyone else but she is actually at par with her mere interest of just enjoying life.
